Gutter replacement pricing made transparent: material choices, run lengths, downpipes, corner and outlet counts, and the fascia repairs that often come with it.
Replacing guttering on a typical three bedroom semi, front and back with two downpipes, generally costs £550 to £1,100 in uPVC. A detached house with longer runs, more corners and three or four downpipes is more often £900 to £1,800.
Aluminium seamless guttering runs roughly double uPVC, and cast iron replacement on a period property in Oxford or Woodstock can reach £120 or more per metre installed because of the weight, fixings and painting involved.
What actually drives the price
Length is the obvious factor, but corners, stop ends, outlets and downpipes each add a fitting, a joint and time. A short run with four corners costs more than a long straight one.
Height matters too. A two storey rear elevation over a conservatory or a sloping garden may need a scaffold or tower rather than ladders, and that access cost can rival the materials.
Materials, honestly compared
uPVC is the right answer for most modern houses: cheap, light, maintenance free and available in half round, square and deep flow profiles. Deep flow is worth specifying on a steep or large roof area where standard half round overflows in a downpour.
Aluminium is formed on site in one continuous length with no joints along the run, which removes the usual leak points, and it suits contemporary and larger properties. Cast iron is about matching a period building and is often the only acceptable option in a conservation area.
Fascias, soffits and the timing question
Guttering is only as good as what it is screwed to. If the fascia behind it is soft, the brackets will not hold and the fall will drift. Replacing gutter and fascia together while the access is up costs far less than doing them a year apart.

A leaking joint, a dropped bracket or a single cracked length is a repair, usually £90 to £250. Replacement makes sense when the plastic has gone brittle and grey, when brackets are pulling out along the run, or when the profile is obsolete and parts no longer match.
Overflowing gutters are frequently a fall or blockage problem rather than a failure. It is worth having that checked before paying for a full replacement you may not need.
How long does new guttering take to fit?
Most houses are done in a day. Larger properties, or jobs where fascias and soffits are being renewed at the same time, take two to three days.
Can new guttering be fitted to old fascia boards?
Only if the timber is sound enough to hold brackets. We check with a probe first and tell you honestly, because fitting good gutter to rotten board wastes your money.
What size gutter do I need?
Standard 112mm half round suits most semi detached and terraced homes. Larger roof areas, steep pitches or heavy run off need a deep flow or 150mm profile to avoid overshooting.
Mesh guards reduce leaf blockages but collect moss and seedlings on top, so they change the maintenance rather than remove it. Under overhanging trees they are usually worth having.
